LIFE AND HOW IT
SUPPORTS YOU

by Wayne C. Bent (1983)

A Course In Self-Knowledge

Life and How it Supports You is a concept manual for LifeSupports Seminar. LifeSupports is a study of the character of God as found in the concepts of natural law and its function.

Metamorphosis

The butterfly presses from his dwelling—once a worm who made its way along the forest floor, found its wings and to heaven soared. We are born and, too, we dwell in lower parts of earth and in these places make our home.

We taste of war and hate and want and fear for demons break our peace. We look, we yearn, and reach for light to break the spell and plague. Then thunder or gentle breeze, whichever, stirs the heavens so we see the mystery of life's drama.

We are free as mind of God views life from mind of man. We rest in Him and see the light which ends this trauma, for it flees away as frightened sparrow. We rest now, for neither war, nor plague, nor want, nor fear of arrow breaks this heart silence. These foul fantasies of man are only for the foolish. Our eyes alone behold their fate; for, near our place of dwelling, not a one is seen to rest so much as on the step. The truth, so pure and clean, does set us free.

Introduction

As surely as the oak is in the acorn, so surely is the gift of god in his promise. If we receive the promise, we have the gift. Education 253

For thousands of years men have studied into the mysteries of the universe looking for the answer to the problems that have plagued mankind from the beginning. Why is it that children must die of starvation? Why does war and waste seem so inevitable? If there is a God, why doesn't He do something about a world that seems destined from the beginning to fail? It is as if the world was a great time-bomb for no other purpose than to go off. The purpose of this book is to show clearly the cause and effect of this world as we know it. It will be shown how life is indeed all that you desire it to be and that the mysteries that have been looked into for centuries are not mysteries at all, but have always been made clear to us. There is not a single problem that plagues the human family that life does not answer clearly and simply. Life is not difficult. The difficulty arises from our efforts in making life other than what it is. In this book you may notice how your life has worked or not worked. You will also notice how you may change whatever it is that hinders your satisfaction in doing the things you would like to do. We all want the same things. These things are peace, security and provision of all life's wants. This is guaranteed by God as you will soon see. In fact, these things are commanded by God. You have to work at not having these things to miss them. For those who are ready to observe life as it is, and experience its great surprises, life is available to you.

Psalm 119:18,97: Open Thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. 0 how love I thy law! It is my meditation all the day. Psalm 19. The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament showeth His handiwork. Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night showeth knowledge. ...The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward. Who can understand his errors? Cleanse Thou me from secret faults. Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression. The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide. Psalm 37:31.

Preface

The book Life and How it Support You is a working syllabus. Its purpose is to create an understanding regarding the knowledge of self in regard to the character of God. After each chapter there will be a section entitled, "Self Knowledge Resume." This resume is designed to help the reader apply what has been discussed in the chapter.

As you will read, life is made up of hundreds of millions of causes producing effects. Not one man, woman or child can escape this unavoidable truth. We may choose not to believe such a thing, but we certainly can not escape it. Our circumstances and life experiences are made up of either what we do or what we think. It is popular to blame individuals in the world for one bad thing or another, but if the truth were known, individuals are only players in a world game. To explain this, diabolical world leaders are not alone responsible for the violence they practice on their subjects. It has been said that our wars are not against people, they are against that bad man or government who rules the people. The truth is, rulers are only a product of the people over which they rule. Nations are never victims of a man. They are victims of themselves.

The Knowledge Of Thought

It is also important that we view our thoughts. The Bible records the necessity of this. "Hear O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto my words, nor to my law, but rejected it." Jeremiah 6:19. If we are to receive the fruit of our thoughts, would it not be important to understand what our thoughts are?

Millions of humans on this planet are in the midst of the most terrible circumstances of war, famine and starvation. Would you suppose that the God of heaven would delight in these things? I think the answer would be obviously not. Then why do these terrible calamities exist? These calamities are the fruits of what men think and do. While it is true we cannot always see and understand the causes of some calamity, we can see and understand what God says about these things. As we come to understand the workings of nature, and of our own human nature, and take a good look at it, we are far more prepared to live in a universe governed by these realities.

The Knowledge Of Man's Self

Self-knowledge is an indispensable tool in our hand. The human self, of itself is only capable of destroying every good thing in the earth including itself. If man would be left to himself with no laws or responsibility to anyone, it would only be a matter of a very short time when nothing would exist on planet earth. The longevity of earth is credited to the intercession of a great and loving God. Man, of himself, is basically stupid and evil. He only wants and takes. The only thing that keeps him from taking what to belongs to someone else is that he is afraid of getting caught or getting in trouble. Take all the laws and police away and you will see in short order what all men are like. Yes, this is true of even you. You would kill to protect yourself without even batting an eye. This is man of himself. This is every man. These are the preachers and politicians, school teachers and plumbers. It is everyone. Any man who imagines that he is better than this in in the most danger. I have seen doctors, lawyers, preachers and politicians lie, cheat and steal just when they thought they might get away with it, or if they thought there might be some advantage to themselves. The reality is that all men are just like these men and women.

When God comes into the life, or when He intercedes in man's behalf, a new element is introduced into the experience. People under the influence of God can now make an honorable move. Man can do good, not because he is basically good (which he is not), but because God is good. Every truly kind and thoughtful deed can only come from God. Every deed of selflessness can only be attributed to His great unselfish heart. God is the soul possessor of the true knowledge of man and, if we are willing, He will open our minds to this most necessary vision. If we know ourselves, we are protected against our self-destructive ways.

The Knowledge Of The Spiritual

There is another necessary element for us to possess in true knowledge of ourselves and of the world. We must be brought to see through the eyes of God rather than the eyes of man. We must have spiritual eyesight. In the time of Christ there were many who did not recognize Him as the Messiah. They did not recognize John the Baptist as Elijah. God looks at the world in spiritual realities rather than through carnal or earthly glasses. If we are led to look at life through a worldly perspective only, we will find ourselves without any real understanding of God or His universe.

Multitudes are deceived by good behavior. It might help us to see that devils are nice and Christians are righteous. There is a difference. All who may be accounted children of God will be able to discern the right from the wrong because they have been able to see the truth of self-knowledge and the reality of the spiritual world as opposed to the physical world.

In reality the spiritual world is the real world. The physical world is that world made up of symbols representing those things going on in our spiritual world. The physical world is a facade which has no truth in of itself, As you spend time looking over some of these things, you will realize the truth of it. If Jesus had had any regard to the physical world as being true, virtually none of the miracles He did would have been done. It was His keen knowledge of the spiritual world and of faith that created the life experience of the Savior of this world. Yes, He is the Savior. He has shown us the total foolishness of the world we thought so important, and revealed the wisdom of the world so long rejected by us.

Jesus has saved us from the pit of our visual senses and saved us for the heaven of God's view of things. Without God's point of view, our world is truly coming to an end. With God's point of view we can see that life does not end. We have His own eternal life. Jesus said, "Whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die." John 11:26.

Taking The Chapter Examinations

When taking the examinations at the end of each chapter, the reader must answer the questions truthfully instead of dishonestly. Dishonesty is the great sand pit on which most people have built their houses. If you lie while taking the examinations you may only fool yourself. Everyone else in the world will already know the answer you should put there. Everyone else in the world may fool themselves, but they do not fool the rest of us. We are all open books and the truth about us flashes across our foreheads like a theater marquee.

The very best thing that can happen to you in life is the knowledge of yourself. When you are honest and evaluate yourself as you truly are, instead of how you would like people to think you are, then your life will take on an integrity that cannot be overthrown.
