Finding Agreement

CHAPTER 12

One minus one equals less than the sum of its parts. One plus one equals more than the sum of its parts.

1+1= > 2
1-1= < 0

Thought: Agreement is power; disagreement is powerless.

Word: Matt. 18:19: "If two of you shall agree on earth regarding anything, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven."

Conclusion: Agreement moves process; disagreement frustrates it.

The principle of agreement is, perhaps, more obvious than some others that we have discussed. Agreement is absolutely essential to your personal success and to your happy and prosperous life. Agreement is not always pleasant. Christ admonished His hearers, "Agree with your adversary quickly, while you are in the way with him, lest at any time your adversary delivers you to the judge." Matt. 5:25. If this principle was followed, our legal system would be much less crowded than it now is. In the major cities, it can take five to ten years to get a lawsuit to trial; just because people will not find agreement.

Agreement involves ourselves and others. Agreement within ourselves is most important. The universe cannot give a person what he wants, in his integrity, unless he has agreement within himself that is really what he wants. Since we always create our environments, if we cannot agree within ourselves what we want, we will be creating an environment of confusion, ambivalence and dissatisfaction. Agreement with others is important also. You learned as a child that if you didn't agree with your sisters, brothers and friends, you didn't have very much fun. You had to agree on what games to play and on their rules. When it came bedtime, you had to agree with your parents or the results weren't much fun either. Throughout school and your adult life, you find it necessary to agree with others. You agreed with your spouse, or you remained single. You agree with your employer, or you find another job. Agreement is a major part of every life.

We have observed many things that are available to the person in harmony with the universe. We have seen that unlimited power and dominion are ours. We have seen that there can be a perfect man. All of these benefits depend on agreement. It is essential that we agree with our knowledge of universal law. As we agree with the universe, it can work for and with us. As we work against it and disagree with it, it will work against us. Agreement is one of the main keys in appropriating all that God has for us. Agreement with law is very important. If, for example, we want to learn photography, we may purchase a camera and enroll in a class of photography. In that class we will learn of the laws of light, color and composition. We will learn the correct procedure for the operation of the camera. If we agree with the rules and laws, we will end up taking some photos and having success at it. If, on the other hand, we disagree with the laws, we will have little better than poor work at the end of the class, and we will have thought it to be a waste. Agreement is essential for success in any area, personal, group or business. If a baseball team didn't agree, they would wind up in last place every year. If they agree, they may play in the World Series.

Perhaps the most obvious example of agreement is marriage. First, it takes agreement to get married. Then, it takes agreement to continue the marriage. If a husband and wife disagree on something, there can be great distress in the relationship. If one partner proceeds on a course that is not agreed upon by the other, there is sure to be grave difficulty; perhaps even divorce...the ultimate disagreement. Even divorce, though, is agreement in many cases. It is an agreement to disagree. If the married partners are in agreement, there is no stopping them. A wife who is supported by her husband, and a husband who has the agreement and support of his wife, are in positions of strength. Their agreement will allow them to create an environment of success in their marriage and other efforts. Regarding the issue of marriage, and other unions as well, Paul commented, "Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship has righteousness with unrighteousness: and what communion has light with darkness?" 2 Cor. 6:14. Amos said, "Can two walk together except they be agreed?" This unequal yoking of light and darkness can be in all human endeavors. If two men are going into business, one honest and in his integrity, the other dishonest and out to take everybody, there will not be agreement and the business will probably fail.

A good example of what happens if there is no agreement can be found in tug-of-war. If two teams of equally strong men are on opposite ends of a rope, there is not likely to be a winner. There is disagreement on the direction of travel and, as a result, nothing is accomplished. When people seek something from the universe, and their desires conflict, there is disagreement. A man and wife may pray for their desire. He is praying for one thing, she for another. Which will prevail? Disagreement is a great hindrance to getting things done. The way God brings resolution to the situation is with agreement. He will bring about agreement if the two will look for what is true. Either the husband or wife will agree on the other's desire, or they may be guided to a new object on which they may both agree.

Agreement is power. Jesus said it this way: "Again I say unto you, that if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven." Matt. 18:19. An example of this power is a man wanting to build a house. If he decides to build the house himself, he obtains the materials and begins. It may take him several months or perhaps a year. If, however, he gains the agreement of a builder and several helpers, he will have a house in a few weeks, or even days. For two or more people who are in their integrity to agree on something is a powerful force. For those who are in their integrity, in harmony with the universe, agreement is great power. A man who is out of agreement with the universe is like a man trying to ride a horse in a different direction than the horse is going. If we will go with the universe and its laws, we can find agreement and power. If we go against it, there is nothing but frustration. Agreement and integrity are linked. A man must never leave his integrity to find agreement. Agreement will never be against your integrity, it will support it.

Build a building and what do you have? You have a structure that stands in integrity and agreement. If the structure was not in agreement, it would not stand. Jesus spoke of a similar situation when He told the story about building a house. "Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it." Matt. 7:24-27. Agreement with the universe is strength and power, disagreement is failure and ruin.

God has used the principle of agreement many times. Is. 45:23: "Unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear." Before the destruction of the rebels, all will confess that the ways of God were fair. They will all go into agreement with Him that their destruction is just. In Exodus 12:31 we read where Pharaoh agreed to let the children of Israel go before God led them out: "And he called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, Rise up, and get you forth from among my people, both ye and the children of Israel; and go, serve the Lord, as ye have said."

In the same way there must be a kind of agreement within us for disaster to strike. There must be an evil that agrees with an evil for the thing to come to pass. This does not mean we have knowledge of it or agree consciously, it means there just must be something there that the disaster can find agreement with. Through our process we learn how to rid ourselves of all agreement with evil. The last evil we go out of agreement with, will be death.

All men want power and all men are promised power when they are in agreement with the Word. Agreement with the Word of God will release its power for you. When I say agreement, I do not mean mental assent, but an agreement with one's very being. When the place we live is the truth of the Word, it will empower us to be what the Word is. Something can hurt you only when you have basic agreement that something can hurt you. If you are in agreement with the Word that "nothing can hurt you," then that is what is so. When we have a machine that doesn't work, what do we do? Is it not true that we fix it? So it is with spiritual laws. If something is not working for us, let's fix it, let's not blame God. Let us look at a spiritual checklist. Are you in perfect agreement with the Word of God about the matter? Is your life firmly behind it? Are your attitudes in support of it? Look and see what is broken before you blame the Lawmaker and say it doesn't work.

So, when all is said and done, find agreement with what is so. Put your efforts and life firmly behind it and it is so.

Agreement - Bible Study

1. Agreement is power when two agree as to what to ask God.

Matt. 18:19: "Again I say unto you, that if two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven."

2. The secret of friendship with God or man is agreement.

Amos 3:3: "Can two walk together except they be agreed?"

3. The secret of freedom is agreement.

Matt. 5:25: "Agree with thine adversary quickly, while you are in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge and the judge deliver thee to the officer and thou be cast into prison. Verily, verily I say unto thee, thou shalt by no means come out thence till thou has paid the uttermost farthing."

4. God gets agreement with the wicked before He destroys them.

Isaiah 45:23: "I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return. That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear."

5. God received agreement from Pharaoh before freeing the children of Israel.

Ex. 12:31: "And he called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, Rise up, and get you forth from among my people, both ye and the children of Israel; and go, serve the Lord, as ye have said."
